  • The CV-37 aircraft carrier USS Princeton was built in 1943 during World War II as the carrier strike force of the Task Force 77 in the US Navy’s 7th Fleet. Later, in 1948, the carrier was placed in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, but when the Korean War broke out, it was recommissioned and, after intensive retraining, participated in many battles during the Korean War. This jacket was one that was custom-painted while the owner was traveling between Korea and Japan during the Korean War, at a time when Sukajan, or Japan jacket, culture began to flourish in Japan. American soldiers who had taken notice of Sukajan that was popular sought out oriental motifs for their flight jackets to commemorate their trip to Japan. The delicacy with which the tiger’s fur is painted one by one in such precise detail, is an outstanding skill which the Japanese are renowned for.
